Haiti Day Seven: In Pictures
Traffic was a nightmare. Since most of my day was spent in the car, I give you a taste of what I saw.
Many makeshift shelters were defeated by the rain last night. As long as there are not tents for everyone, this problem is only expected to get worse. I bumped into the US Army, offloading boxes of meals-ready-to-eat and emergency radios. Nice guys, and very efficient. The traffic jam we hit tonight was inexplicable. I think everyone was trying to run last-minute errands because tomorrow is February 12. One month since Haiti’s world changed. It’s the start of three full days of mourning and remembrance. And then, only then, Haitians say, they’ll be ready to mentally move on.
Though I’d love to camp out in the street with ordinary Haitians, I know it’s not a realistic option. So I’ve found a hotel and I’ll be moving in tomorrow. At least it’s in an actual Haitian neighborhood rather than a military base. Can’t wait.
